Tamilnadu Government has drastically reduced the stamp duty and transfer duty (surcharge) on registration, besides making the duty uniform for urban and rural areas.

The Government slashed the stamp duty from 8 per cent in urban areas and 7 per cent in rural areas to 6 per cent. The transfer duty (surcharge) which was 5 per cent for both urban and rural areas, has been brought down to just 2 per cent, apart from one per cent registration fee.

The new rate of stamp duty will be 9 per cent applicable throughtout the State.
The stamp duty revision was made after nearly 28 years, the sources said.

In another major decision, the Government decided to collect stamp duty only for the undivided share of the land for Tamilnadu Housing Board flats. Earlier, it was collected for both the land cost and the building value, which the public said was on the higher side.
